~ Byron's Gasser Madness! ~

~ Photos by Bob Wagner ~

This page contains many great shots entrusted to Don Ewald by famed motorsports artist, David Peters (Peter's Art). They are the life's work of the late Bob Wagner. Wagner was one of SoCals premier drag racing photographers in the 1960s and early 70s. He's best remembered for his incredible photo layouts of some of the top cars of the era that appeared in virtually every major drag racing and hot rod magazine on the market. Bob was also one of the premiere model builders of all time -- but that's a story for another place and time. This is about his photo history of gassers.  Unfortunately he passed away without indexing or identifying his work. A cardinal sin of most photographers I've learned. So, what I can't ID will have to be filled in as time goes by. I know others will recognize his shots.  All of these photos are protected under copyright and are the property of David Peters.

Don was kind enough that, with David Peters' permission, he split up the collection between his website, We Did It For Love, Jim Sorenson's websites, Awful, Awful Fuel Altereds and The Funnycar Years, and my own Gasser Madness!.  I want to thank Don, John, David Peters and, of course, Bob Wagner.  BS

Note: Many of Wagner's transparencies have suffered irreparable color loss - what you see is the best I can do with them.

Okay, okay...so they aren't gassers.  Here's a very few Funny Car shots from the time when they were just beginning and still looked like cars instead of plastic wedges.
Actually a street machine, The Mind Binder Willys was a beautiful piece.
