Gasser
Madness,
I would appreciate you adding my 'gasser' to your "Visitors Rides"
pages.
Greetings from Bangkok, Thailand. As an old racer and gasser buff,
you can imagine my delight when I discovered that there is organized
drag racing here in Thailand. Not only that, but there are some
pretty good fabricators too. I decided to build a "modern"
gasser-style "EE/G" racer here in my new home . . . why not.
My car is a 1990 Mazda Familia, a model never imported to the U.S.A.
It is about 2/3 the size of an S10 or Ranger (98 in. wheel base). I
wanted to use a V-8, but they were impossible to find and import
duties are prohibitive. Instead I have gone with the cheap and
readily available straight-6 Toyota "1JZ". This is an excellent hot
rod motor: aluminum head, 4-valves per cylinder, duel overhead cams,
two turbochargers, digital fuel injection, DIS ignition, and a very
solid bottom end. Although it only displaces 151 cu.in. (2500cc),
with my few modifications it makes about 325hp (that'd be a 650hp
302!). I am using a modified A340 auto trans (3400 stall converter
and modified valve body, clutches and steels from MV Automatics in
Australia). The back-halved chassis employs a 1-ton Toyota truck
rear end (4.63 gears) with spool, lift bars, drag shocks,
locally-made (!) 26X10.5X15 slicks, and a fully tied-together
12-point roll cage. I have imposed on visiting friends and family to
bring various race car parts in their suit cases over the years. The
car weighs 1750 pounds and runs in the high 11s. It's a lot of fun.
I want to thank my sponsors Glasurit Paint, Ampoline Oil
(Australia), V.V.P. 4X4 Center (Bangkok), and Pride Racing
(Australia).
