Byron's Gasser Madness!
~ Photos from Ralph Reiter ~

Thanks to Ralph Reiter for sharing his collection of photos from the Northwest dragstrips.  I hope everyone enjoys them as much as I did.

Before we start, here's an update from Bill Dukes.  Bill has the best memory for this kind of information of anyone I've ever corresponded with, so I tend to take what he says as, pretty much, gospel.  You'll find his comments in RED.  Thank you Bill.

Much more information added today, courtesy of "Flyin Phil" Elliott.  His comments are in GREEN.  Thank you so much Phil.  Byron

A couple of corrections from Bruce McClurg.  Bruce's comments in BEIGE.  Thanks Bruce.  Byron

Blatt & Windman C/A Chevy
Brasher, Cummings & Rose A/GS Willys

Butch Thuney's 55 Chevy C/Gasser

Car was originally a reddish orange, then became R,W&B, later had stars added. Ran a Hilborn injected 331ci Chevy backed by a 4-speed. When Muncies and B-Ws failed, Butch tried Chrysler and Ford boxes. He was from Des Moines, Washington and built and raced the car out of his parent's garage. He and the 55 always had the latest stuff. He still owns the car.

Looks like a 35 or 36 (?) C/Gas Ford

The grill is clearly a '35. Don't know the bodies well enough to distinguish.  Bob Grudem

Okay...so it's a B/MP Cuda, not a gasser.  B/MP was originally designed as a "street" version of the gasser classes...yeah...right!
DelRio & Carlson's Anglia
The DelRio Brother's beautiful and fast A/SR
I think that this Cuda is actually an early Pro/Stock car but, what the heck...you're not going to see them in too many other places on the net.

This car is a Dodge Challenger. Bob Grudem

Duh!  Thanks Bob.  Byron

The Fever challenger is a pro stock car originally owned by Chick Denuno of Maryland High Performance. I was going to buy it ($3500) to run in C/A until Bob Riffle lowered the record by .4's.Keep up the great work. John Cesca
Isn't it amazing how much you can find out from one obscure photo?  Thanks, John.  4 tenths, huh?  I think I might pass too!  Byron

The Fossil C/Gas Anglia
Huffy Puffy a 37(?) B/Gas Chevy
The Jardine Headers Willys running CC/G (or C/GS...take your  pick)
Joe Mindaca.  Looks to be a B/MSP or so.

Regarding photo of the '58 (I think) 'Vette that's labeled as Joe Mindaca is actually Joe Murdaca from Vacaville. This car ran 10-0's to 10-teens and was driven occasionally by Ken Dondero.

The E/Gas Kanuk 55 Chevy
The King Rat Willys vs. a C/A Anglia

That lace-painted Anglia is Dan Cyr, a homebuilt car with injected 427 Chevy and Clutch-flite. The engine was set way back. It almost always ran B/A. Photo is at Mission. Dan went on to an A/EA Cobra replica, now has an A/SA 427 Camaro. He also owns the Roadster shows in Seattle, Portland and Oakland (most recently actually in Pomona). Dan was from Renton, Washington at the time.

The Kokomotion II Henry J.  I don't remember if it ran Gas or Altered.  I'd suspect the latter, but...?
Mike Mitchell's (RIP, Mike) pseudo A/GS Corvette
The Motor Mouse C/Gas Willys

The Mr. Crude C/Gas Anglia

I am sure the car ran in G\Gas, not C\G as stated. It ran a 6 cyl. engine and I think it was ran by Rydell, Hope and Lang. It won best engineered award at the Indy drags one year (at least I'm pretty sure it did anyways) as it had two Chevy V8 heads cut in half and welded back together and made to fit the 6cyl.(to make it a crossflow type system). I also think the car held the national record in it's class.

Thanks, Dave (an old Canadian drag racing fan.)

Dave, No...Thank  you.  Byron

Nuisance Willys.  Looks like B/Gas(?)
The Bob Panella's  B/GS Anglia...4 speed and all...driven by one of the best "stick men" around, Ken Dondero.  For those who don't know, Bob Panella (current NHRA P/ST) is the son of this Bob Panella.
The Rapid Transit B/Gas 55 Chevy
The Sander Brothers B/A 55 Chevy
This little Sunbeam Tiger was run in B/A by Bill Foster.  Hmmm...bet that ain't a stock 260!

Isn't really a Tiger but an Alpine, and it was powered by a 426 Hemi. It actually ran really well. Bill Foster was from near Yakima, Washington.

A B/A Thames Panel
The Triad Willys
Randy Troxel & Son's beautiful A/G Thames Panel, Radiation
Unknown Corvette.  Not any more!

It's Texiera and Sons.  They owned a wine vineyard in Northern California. Car was 426 Hemi powered B/Gas. It was the West's quickest B/Gasser, running high nines at 138.  We are talking 70-72.

Great site! There is a photo of a '61-'62 Vette, Texiera & Son. The 'Vette body was actually sitting on a '41 Willys frame that was under the original Willys. Fred Texiera drove it very consistently and with the engine by Dick Landy, it screamed!

Paul Day's "Agitator" 33 Willys at Cayuga in 1968

Byron, nice new pics.  Since you are open to suggestions, I noticed a small error or two in the Ralph Reiter series of photos.  Basically, there is reference to the Agitator Willys of Paul Day was taken in 68.  No, the 33 debuted in 1970.  In 68-69, Day ran a Willys PU, purchased from Hicks and Sons out here in So-Cal.  Hicks bought the car from Gene Ciambella (Conway).  When Day crashed the PU, he built the 33 coupe.

Okay...I admit it...it's an Altered...but who cares?  It's too cool!

Is Dan Cyr again, being towed up the return road at Mission. Either he or his psuedo partner worked for the highway department. Most of the tin was built from recycled road signs, quite thick.

Bob Chipper's Hemi-Cuda BB/GS at Cayuga in 1968

Also, the Bob Chipper BB/GS Cuda was another car listed as taken 68.  Couldn't be.  Why?  The car was based on a 70 era model Cuda!

Exhibition Auto Painting chopped Willys Pickup

This Willys pickup was originally built by Tom Bigford (his Anglia is elsewhere here) for C/G. It was as trick as it could be at the time, with chrome everything. Before it was completed, it was owned by Jerry Damen's paint shop in Kent, Washington. I always wondered if the paint bill was more than Tom had in the car and he just walked away. Several folk raced it under rent/lease from Damen. It won big in northwest shows too (here it is Clark Marshall's Custom Auto, Hot Boat & Speed Show in Seattle).

The Karbelt Thames
Despite appearances, Lloyd Ponting's "Fearless Fly" was evidently a pretty stout performer.
Guerrero & Lisnaki National Record holding I/Gas 37 Chevy coupe.

Is really Guerrero and Liesmaki. Al G and Ben L ran that 38 Chevy hard, everywhere. It held records and won races with its GMC six-cylinder. They went on to altereds and altereds and FCs in Pro Comp. Ben is still doing machine work for many northwest racers.

The Hairy Canary Willys Pickup.  This car is currently being restored as a nostalgia gasser.
Holeshot from Performance Automotive.  Very nice 39 Willys

Twig Ziegler's 33 Willys at Puyallup in 1970.  This was Jack Coonrod's old Willys.

I love this photo! This is a funny car race at Puyallup, in the days of whatever showed up. It was actually a big event, in about May of 1970. Twig had been running the ex-Coonrod car with an injected 426 (it was in Hot Rod that way) and borrowed enough stuff to built a 1/2-inch 392 to run with the northwest blown gas circuit. Most of the pieces came from Columbia Racing Engines. This is first-time out with the new combo. That's Ed McCulloch in the red shirt out on the line to watch his protégé. It was a year that the Whipple & McCulloch Duster ruled the west coast. It would only be a few months until that car burned in its trailer and Twig bought the remains.

The Vancouver Photo Finishing Willys pickup...previously the King Rat seen above.

When this car changed from King Rat to Vancouver Photo Finishing, it also changed from Chevy to wedge Mopar power.
