AA/Gassers
Chris Abbey, in the Goshgarian & Abbey entry, qualified 6th, but bulbed against Dale Boomgaarden in the Mallicoat Bros. Cuda in round one.

Howard Anderson qualified 7th, and made it to the final round where both he and Dale Boomgaarden broke before half-track.  Howard coasted faster and won the class.  Congratulations Howard.
In case anyone is wondering just how tough AA/Gas is, ask Tim & Diane Burns.  Their 7.096 wasn't quick enough to qualify!  The eventual Class winner was only 91 thousandths quicker.
Bill Bitting had a similar problem when a quickest ever 7.24 didn't make the cut.

In the first pic, "Twin" Mallicoat (I'm guessing it's Gary) squirts the "start-em-up juice" into the injectors, followed by the burnout and a "laundry" shot.  The Mallicoat Brothers' Cuda, driven by Dale Boomgaarden, qualified second with a 6.865.  Broke in the first round, they were back for round two thanks to Chris Abbey's redlight.  They put away Rich Roberts (who also redlighted) in round 2 with a very strong 6.904, only to break in the final against an, also broken, Howard Anderson, who was able to coast faster for the win.
Ron Nunes qualified #3 but lost to Howard Anderson in round one.  I'd try to explain, but the Goodguys site does a better job:

(W)

Howard Anderson

0.505

7.020

194.76

(L)

Ron Nunes

0.510

 7.017

177.16

Huge upset in the first round Anderson leaves on Nunes and manages to hold the lead all the way. Margin of victory = 0.002 seconds (approximately 6 inches). Fantastic race.

Steve Wood qualified #4, but was put away by Rich Roberts in Round One.

Low qualifier (so what else is new?) Steve Woods lost Round Two (and the VRA 2002 Championship) to Howard Anderson when an oil line separated at about 330'.  No, contrary to announcements, Steve did not break the motor.
A/Gas
In the final of A/Gas, it came down to the number 1 and number 2 qualifiers.  Steve Castelli, #2 qualifier ran a quicker, but losing, 7.721 to Mark Mahood's holeshot 7.734.

Jim Data had his Pontiac moving this weekend.  After qualifying 4th with a 7.715, and putting away Larry Ofria in round one, An off-pace 8.367 cost him the second round against Steve Castelli's 7.826.
After winning A/Gas at Sonoma in April, Rich Facciano was unable to make the cut this weekend.  He qualified 10th...for an 8 car field.

Mark Mahood was on a mission this weekend.  Number 1 qualifier and class winner.  Congratulations Mark.

Sean Renteria qualified 5th, but was unfortunate enough to draw eventual A/Gas winner, Mark Mahood, in round one.  Mark put Sean away on a holeshot.

Tommy Schiffilea moved up to A/Gas this season.  He qualified 5th, but lost in the first round to Steve Castelli despite an R/T almost a tenth better than Steve!

Unknown (to me) A/Gas Corvette.  I'm going to guess and say that it's Troy Moyle.  Troy put Ed Cooper (the red Dart) away in the first round and lost to eventual A/Gas winner, Mark Mahood in the second round.

While I know most of the guys in AA/Gas and A/Gas, the same cannot be said for the guys running B/Gas and C/Gas.  There's a number of good running and good looking cars about which I know nothing!  I'd like to correct that.  If you can fill me in on the specifics of any of these cars or people, I'd be grateful.

Byron

B/Gas
Good looking 56 B/Gas Chevy.

#3 qualifier, Brad Chafee, got outrun in the final against Scott Smith.

Don't know who owns or drives, but here's a nice looking Firebird running B/Gas.

Well...now we know who it is!

Hey the photo under event photos-Good Guys 4th Fuel and Gas Nationals under B -Gas
You know the Orange Firebird where you don't know who it is.
IT'S CHRISTIANSEN'S AUTO REPAIR with DRIVER KEN CHRISTIANSEN JR. FROM FRESNO!!!
 COOL PICTURE GUYS...
 Esther Christiansen

Tom Franks qualified #5 and made it to the second round where he was put away on a holeshot by Brad Chafee.

Kevin Riley didn't qualify this weekend, but from the second photo, I would guess that he was the VRA B/Gas champion for 2002.  Congratulations Kevin.
B/Gas class winner Scott Smith.  Looks like a pretty happy group to me.

Dave Torgrimson made it to the B/Gas semi finals where he broke against eventual class winner Scott Smith.
Looks like Jess Tyree decided to come play with the Gasser guys.  Unfortunately, the best he could muster was a 9.139 and he failed to qualify.
C/Gas
Very nice looking C/Gas 55 Chevy.

One of my favorite C/Gas cars, Clay Bentson's cool Thames.

A trio of very nice C/Gas Camaros.  What is this, anyway...Super Chevy Week?  ;o)

Eventual class winner, Monti Fitzgerald.
Good looking C/Gas Nova at speed.
Bill Galli throws out the laundry.

Jesse Wooten bulbed in the semi-final to class winner Monti Fitzgerald.
?/Gas

Though I'm familiar with both of these cars, I don't know what class they were entered in

Chad Demeter's beautiful Willys is now a pile of parts after barrel-rolling at the big end.  Too bad.  It was a real beauty.
Art Gustafson came out to play with his "Willy Fast".
