Byron's Gasser Madness!

~ A few photos from 1967 ~

Between runs at CHRR 2000, Mike Boersma came up and handed me an envelop containing a few photos. He had been wandering around the swap meet and spotted and purchased a number of snapshots. No one has any idea who took these or even where they were taken, although I'd be willing to bet that someone will be able to ID locations on a couple of them. The dates, where shown, are from the actual snapshot print. Thank you Mike, Byron.

As the owner-builder-driver of this C/GS Willys, Barb Hamilton, the first woman ever licensed by NHRA to drive a supercharged car, terrorized Midwest dragstrips (and the NHRA Record) for a number of years. The car now resides in the Garlits museum.

Known and respected nationally, Jack Ditmars was probably better know for his exploits with an Opel Kadett called the "Mini-Brute". The car that I and many others remember him for was the "Lil Screamer", an aptly named '34 Ford B/Altered.

Ed and Ray Kohler and their "King Kong" Anglia were half of a pair of Anglias that totally upset the A/Gas Supercharged status quo in the 1965-1966 timeframe (the other half of that pair was Shores & Hess and their "Skipper's Critter" car). Seen here in AA/Altered livery, this was probably at an NHRA meet prior to the NHRA deciding that these were legal Gassers. Thanks to Eddie Vidrine, I can now tell you that this pic and the Ohio Gearge pic (next) were taken at Indy.

There's not much to say about "Ohio George" Montgomery that hasn't already been said. You might beat him in a "warmup" style meet before the Nationals or the Winternationals, or you might beat him in a match race...but when it came to the "Money Run" at a meet where it counted, George was there and winning more often than not. The car, as shown here, was running a blown Ford Cammer.
